Mark S. Carlin is a principal and co-founder of the firm. Often called “a lawyer’s lawyer,” the focus of his 25–year law practice has been complex litigation involving family, commercial, real estate, tort, and estate law. Since serving as a public defender for the District of Columbia, he has gained a reputation as a highly skilled litigator. He has been lead counsel in jury and non-jury cases and appeared before the appellate courts of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. He was recently selected by his peers to be included in Best Lawyers of America (2007)

Mr. Carlin received his law degree from Yale Law School (J.D., 1977) and his undergraduate degree from State University of New York at Buffalo (B.A., 1974, summa cum laude). He is a Phi Beta Kappa member.

Clients and opposing counsel alike praise Mr. Carlin for his in-depth research, organization, and preparation for court appearances, as well as his effective oral advocacy. Other attorneys often seek his advice for his distinct knowledge of the arcane rules of procedure and evidence. He is known to be a skilled creative negotiator.

Mr. Carlin is admitted to the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia bars and courts. His articles have appeared in well-respected publications,
such as Washington Business Journal and The National Law Journal. In 2002 the National Association of Medicaid Fraud Units honored him for his pro bono service.

Mr. Carlin is trained in Collaborative Law and is a founding member of Collaborative Divorce Association, Inc., which promotes an alternative to litigating family law cases. Since 1994 Mr. Carlin has been an instructor at the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, teaching new lawyers trial practice. He has lectured at area law schools and the Federal Judicial Center. He serves as appointed Chair of the Committee on Admissions of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and is a voting delegate to the District of Columbia Judicial Conference.
